The Poached Pear Bistro

It was my husband’s birthday earlier in the week and I made a dinner reservation for us at The Poached Pear Bistro in Point Pleasant, NJ. One of his co-workers had mentioned he and his wife had gone here for dinner and recommended it.

I must say, The Poached Pear Bistro certainly did not disappoint. The interior had dove gray walls with dark wood flooring. Lovely art work was sparingly displayed adding just enough interest and color to the interior. For a Tuesday evening at 5:30, the dining room already had a nice group of tables seated.
After reading over the menu and hearing the nightly specials, my husband and I placed our order. For starters my husband selected the Jersey Corn Bisque ($12) that was redolent of just picked Jersey corn. The applewood smoked bacon added another layer of flavor as did the goat cheese crouton, pasilla pepper oil and corn shoots (my husband compared them to corn silk). I selected the nightly special, mushroom bisque with truffle oil. The soup was not what I expected, but way better. It was creamy, but not from heavy cream, a delicate touch was used when adding the truffle oil so as not to overpower the soup; it was sublime.

For our main courses my husband selected the nightly special of Corvina Fish over Risotto. Corvina is from Central and South American countries and has a mild, sweet taste. The fish has a large, firm flesh and resembles Snapper. He thoroughly enjoyed his selection. I chose Apple Cider Brined Pork Chop ($35) that came with cabbage marmalade, crispy spaetzle, caramelized apples with a bourbon cider reduction. The pork was succulent and tender. The red cabbage was finely chopped and tasty. The accompany bourbon cider reduction enhanced the pork...outstanding.

I offered to share a dessert with my husband, however, he wanted his own. He selected the nightly special which was Key Lime Pudding in a cup served with seasonal berry compote on top; another great choice.  I chose Grand Marnier Crepe Cake ($13). Grand Mariner mousse was layered between the crepes and a small cup of vanilla gelato accompanied the cake. My goodness, this was divine! I have made crepe cakes and I know the work that goes into making this dessert. It looked deceiving as it looks so light and delicate, but it was rich and delicious. I couldn’t finish it all, however, I did devour the small cup of luscious vanilla gelato...yum!

Overall, the portions at The Poached Pear are generous. Before tip it was approximately $75 per person for dinner. An added benefit, it’s BYOB making it even more attractive. If you’re looking for a wonderful dining experience, with outstanding food and good service, The Poached Pear should be on your short list.
