With today's weather being foggy, misty and damp, I wanted a hearty meal for tonight. The bonus is I'm not working today. My late mother-in-law gave me her copy of Jean Anderson's book The Grass Roots Cookbook. I found a recipe for mushroom-smothered Swiss steak. As you know, we don't eat much meat in our house, but this recipe sounded delicious. So this morning, I headed off to Delicious Orchards and Whole Foods to get the ingredients for this dish.
My first stop was Delicious Orchards. As I walked through the bakery I slightly digressed from my mission and picked up a streusel bun for $1.49. Oh boy, was it delicious. The bakery isn't stingy on their streusel topping, nice and thick. Next, the green grocer section for white button mushrooms at $2.99/lb.
While the heavy rains hadn't appeared, I made my way to Whole Foods. Their current special through next Tuesday is boneless sirloin steak for $6.99/lb. Ingredients in hand, time to read the recipe to get everything done in a timely manner.
I cooked the Swiss steak in my LeCrueset braiser and the meat came out tender, no need for a knife. My husband and I really enjoyed the dish, especially the accompanying sauce!
