In an earlier blog post (CSA week 8), I mentioned that I had received a head of cabbage. As it was a rather a large head for just two people, I had to find something other than coleslaw to make. My search led me Cabbage, Potato and Leek Soup, a recipe by none other than Melissa Clark from The New York Times. This recipe appeared in her New York Times column A Good Appetite entitled “Cabbage Flexes Its Muscles Three Ways,” from March 9, 2012.
Earlier this year in the New York Time, Ali Slagle posted a recipe for French onion grilled cheese sandwiches. The recipe called for caramelized onions mixed with grated gruyère cheese. This sounded so good. Recently, Whole Foods had on Prime Member special, wild caught Atlantic cod for $8.99/lb. Cod is a favorite fish of my husband, therefore, what better reason to pick up a pound. I wanted to prepare something that was fairly quick and easy. A web search brought me to the website “Everyday Food” and the recipe baked cod with potatoes and olives. The peak season for cauliflower is now through November. With that in mind, I recently purchased a small head of cauliflower at Delicious Orchards, Colts Neck. Many, many years ago when I use to make weekly trips for my produce (now I use their personal shopping service and have my husband pick up my order), I used to grab their recipe handout sheets. The weather the past few days has been cold, damp and snowy at times and I thought it was a good idea to put up a pot of soup the other morning. I’ve have, since 1997, a cookbook by Arthur Schwartz called Soup Suppers. In it, there is a wonderful recipe for lentil soup with fennel and sun-dried tomatoes. A little history on Mr. Schwartz. Back in the 90’s Arthur was the radio host of a show called “Food Talk.” He was also a restaurant and food critic at the New York Daily News. Arthur has written cookbooks on topics such as Italian food, Jewish cooking and the food of New York City to name a few. At our house, we eat New Jersey sweet white corn from July 4th until Labor Day. Sometimes after Labor Day, though, the corn loses some of it summer sweetness. So while the getting is good, I found a recipe for corn chowder in my Delicious Orchards recipe file. Yes, I have a file of recipes from Delicious Orchards. When my children were growing up, I would head up to the ‘Orchard’ once a week to purchase my produce for the upcoming week. Now, I take advantage of their Personal Shopping service. Back in the day, I would grab a sales sheet that had the weekly specials on one side and recipes on the back. Now I don’t know how old this flyer is, at least twenty years, the sheet is dated for May 30th through June 5th. D.O., can you search your archives to find out how old my sheet is? Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day and some may say it might be one of the most stressful days to dine out. With that in mind, have you considered having a special dinner at home? I did. While food shopping yesterday at my local Wegmans, I came across pre-made Beef Wellingtons. I noticed when I was perusing through their app earlier, there was even a digital coupon for $5 off. The cost for the entree was $15 per portion. A quick text to my husband and he was agreeable to this special dinner. With my entree chosen, I went over to the produce department and selected a pound of Brussels sprouts for roasted sprouts topped with pomegranate molasses. The molasses are available at Wegmans in the international aisle. As I had some fresh rosemary in my refrigerator, I thought roasted rosemary potatoes would be a great accompaniment. |
